Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are injured and cannot be selected, thus Sharma has been designated captain. Since India’s loss to England in the T20 World Cup semifinals in November 2022, they have not participated in T20Is. Since the 2022 T20 World Cup, Suryakumar has been leading Hardik. Suryakumar also captained India throughout the three T20Is played in South Africa and the five-match T20I series against Australia.
